The friendships I’ve made and the open and uplifting attitudes everyone has.
Bootcamp is my favorite—I started going to increase my strength, mobility, and endurance—I didn’t realize I’d also make tons of supportive friends there! It’s perfect for anyone with workout-ADD—it’s constantly changing and keeping me challenged.
Don’t cave to anxiety—and don’t stop. When I first moved to DC I had crippling gym-anxiety and hid in the back of every class (at another gym), imagining that all the super-fit people around me were just BORN that way. I was so wrong. Everyone is on a fitness journey and it’s different and challenging for all of us—and most Balance members are excited to ask you about yours and tell you about theirs.
I map out my workout calendar at the beginning of the month and fit other events around that schedule—not the other way around. Yes, that means saying ”sorry, I already have plans” to some happy hour invites.Note: Your non-gym friends are going to say, “You can skip the gym once, come out with us!” Don’t set that precedent: They’ll know that you don’t take your fitness seriously—and duh, skipping a work out here and there will add up. Yes, they will harbor secret resentment that you’re dedicated and they aren’t and slowly you’ll grow apart and hardly see each other anymore… but that’s why you have new gym friends… yay! Just kidding. Sort of.
Balance has helped me figure out what my goals should actually be. I came in the door just wanting to be skinny—it didn’t take me long to figured out that no, what I wanted was to be strong and healthy. And yes, that means I have huge glutes… and I kind of love them.

Anything else you want to say about why you love your gym?
Sure the Foggy Bottom Balance might have not-scratchy towels and mouthwash in tiny shot glasses—but seriously, do you need all that? #ThomasCircleFoLyfe
